Take a trip back in time to see what life was like for convicts locked away in Fremantle Prison during the 1800s.

Thousands of men built their own jail, after being shipped to Australia from Great Britain. The solitary cells and gallows set the scene for an unbearable system of punishment that lasted for around 140 years.

Now the prison serves as a history lesson that’s dished out in a fun and entertaining way. A popular tourist attraction in Western Australia, this is the first World Heritage listed building in the state.

There are a number of tours you can take – depending on your “conviction”:

  • True crime: Learn about the bushrangers, thieves and murderers who perished here.
  • Behind bars: Observe the harsh realities as your walk through the prison. This is 100% wheelchair accessible.
  • Convict prison: Find out what it really took for the men to build their own prison.
  • Tunnels tour: Get a thrill out of creeping through the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the prison. You must be physically fit and keen for some adventure.
  • Torchlight tour: Feel the echo of loneliness by joining the guides at night (not for the faint hearted).

We suggest spending at least three hours here, to get the full experience. The cafe is open daily, if you’re feeling peckish.

Go on, you deserve a pint of ale, after spending the day in prison.Little Creatures Fremantle Brewery is an inviting spot for families looking to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner in the sunshine. This massive brewery gets very busy, attracting locals and tourists alike.

Get there a little early if you can, especially if you want to sit near the sandpit to keep an eye on your kids as they play. The hearty food hits the spot and you’ll want to keep the drinks coming. It’s worth hanging around for a brewery tour (1pm, 2pm, 3pm) if you have time.
